Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express edition is the data platform which Power Music uses. Normally you will not experience any problems, but occasionally other software may cause compatibility issues.
If you get the following error when trying to load Power Music:
'An error has occured whilst establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to the SQL server 2005 this failure may be caused by by the fact that under the default settings, the SQL server does not allow remote connections (SQL network interface error no 26:error locating server/instance specified)'
then it is possible that another application has configured SQL Server 2005 to start manually instead of automatically.
To solve this problem:

  1. Exit Power Music
  2. Go to 'start' > 'All Programs' > 'Microsoft SQL Server 2005' > 'Configuration Tools' > 'SQL Server Configuration Manager'
  3. Select SQL Server 2005 Services
  4. The services SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) and SQL Server Browser should have the settings - State 'Running' and Start Mode 'Automatic'. If not, then you need to manually start them, beginning with the SQL Server Browser.
  5. If the start mode is not Automatic, right click and select Properties. On the Properties screen, select the Service tab. Set the Start Mode to Automatic and press OK.
  6. To start the service, right click and select Start.

Now launch Power Music and the status bar should read 'Connected'
A similar problem can occur if you run Power Music but the status bar reads 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object.' Repeat the steps 1-6 above.
If this doesn't work or if you have other problems with SQL Server 2005 then add a reply to this discussion or contact Cambron Software.

Another problem which has been reported by a couple of users is that after a successful installation, the next time the computer is restarted the following message occurs when trying to open Power Music:
'SQL Server has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.'
At Cambron we have been unable to replicate this error and have been trying to find a cause and solution. The common factor appears to be Vista and the existence of a pre-installed instance of SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) - you can see if you have this using the method described above.

So far the only solution we have found is to turn off User Account Control and this appears to work. We are still trying to find out why. UAC is the feature Microsoft added to Vista to increase security - it caused the annoying prompt you get every time you try to run most programs and most people click yes anyway. It is designed to protect your computer by forcing you to authorize execution of programs. If it is switched off you will no longer receive these prompts.
Microsoft recommend not turning UAC off and there are lots of discussion about it if any of you have concerns. To turn it off, go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Tasks and you will see ‘Turn User Account Control on or off’. Uncheck the box and press OK. You will then be prompted to restart your computer. After restarting try running Power Music and see if it works now.

If you have this problem and turning off UAC works, we would really like to hear from you. It is easy to join this site and contribute. We would like to know if you too have the existence of the MSSMLBIZ instance of SQL Server or if there are any other factors that you think may cause the problem.

I am having a serious problem trying to reinstall Power Music after formatting my laptop and reinstalling Windows XP (Home Edition with SP3). The install gets about 3/4 of the way through and then gives an error message. I should have taken a screenshot but I have pasted the install log here instead:

Hi Jeremy
Apparently this is a Microsoft issue with XP SP3.
We are about to release a new version of Power Music but we are updating the installer first before release.
There is now a service pack 3 for SQL Server Express and this will be deployed with the new Power Music.

Meanwhile, you can install SQL Server Express with SP3 directly from this Microsoft link:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=65212

If this installs correctly (and according to Microsoft it should), then proceed with the Power Music installation again.

Please let us know how you get on as this will obviously affect our installer update.

There are now 2 Power Music installations for XP on the install page - one for XP SP2 and one for XP SP3. If anyone is reading this please use the correct installation rather than using the Microsoft link above.
