Does anyone have any problems installing Power Music - in particular the trial version on the Cambron website?

Choose the correct version from the download page. If you are unsure whether your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit, then use the following method:

In Windows Vista:
Click Start, right-click on Computer and select Properties.
* For a 64-bit version operating system: 64-bit Operating System appears for the “System type” under “System”.
* For a 32-bit version operating system: 32-bit Operating System appears for the “System type” under “System”.

In Windows XP:
Click Start, right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
On the General tab the operating system appears as follows:
* For a 64-bit version operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version appears under System.
* For a 32-bit version operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version appears under System.

If you have had problems with the installation, then press Save when prompted to download, not Run. Once the installation exe is downloaded, double-click on it and it should extract the installation files into a new folder and auto-run setup.exe.

If you are not allowed to download .exe files then download the zipped version.
Unzip the file into a new folder.
Run setup.exe from the new folder. Do not try to run setup.exe without unzipping (extracting) the zip file first.

We have become aware of a problem with the installation if you are using XP Service Pack 3.
This is due to a bug in Microsoft XP SP3 which causes the installation of Microsoft SQL Server Express to fail. The problem is that a conflicting file remains from XP SP2 and needs to be removed.

The solution is to uninstall MSXML6 SP2, by using Windows Installer Cleanup Utility which can be downloaded from http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e....

Once you have downloaded this file - run the downloaded msicuu2.exe to install the cleanup utility. Then launch it from Start>All Programs>Windows Install Cleanup. Scroll down the list of components and select MSXML6 SP2 then press Remove. The file will be removed. Close the program then go back to the Power Music Installation folder of extracted files and run setup again. It should now install without the error.

We have managed to replicate this problem and have resolved it. It can happen if you re-install windows XP and then try to re-install other applications which use Sql Server Express, such as Power Music.
It is caused by left-over components from previous installations, one of which is described above.
We used the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (see details of this at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en-us). We had to remove all references to SQL Server Express, including the Agent. This alone was not enough - we also had to remove MSXML6 SP2.

The installation of Power Music was retried and this time there was no problem.

There is now a version of the installation for XP SP2 users - this installs SQL Server Express SP2.

Have you unzipped/extracted the download?
If you have downloaded the zipped version (PMInstall.zip) and run setup.exe from the folder without unzipping the folder first you will get an error when Power Music is installing.

The solution: depending on your operating system, if you double-click on PMInstall.zip you will see the contents and there will be a button or an option to 'Extract all files'. You must select this option so that the contents are extracted from the zipped file.
Then run setup.exe from the location you specified for the extracted files.

Only use the zip file if you are not allowed to download .exe files. The zip file has now been replaced by PMInstall.exe. This is a self-extracting zip and can be run once saved on your PC. It will automatically extract the files and run the installation.

I have followed these solutions and cannot get anything to work at all. I have spent a whole day formatting disks, re-installing Windows, updating service packs, downloading and installing all of the aforementioned files but to no avail. I continually get a message:

"Component SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3 (x86) has failed to install with the following error message:
"The process terminated unexpectedly. "

The following components were successfully installed:
- Cambron Software End User License Agreement

The following components failed to install:
- SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3 (x86)"

How can bits hang around from a previous installation when I have formatted a whole drive? This renders my purchase of Power Music absolutely useless now.

We would really like to help you, Jeremy.
We have been thoroughly testing the installation of Power Music over the weekend. Rolled back to XP2, removed all references to SQL Server, fresh install of Power Music and we cannot get it to fail.
The issue you have is a Microsoft one with SQL Server Express. Could it possibly be a memory fault?
Did something happen to your laptop which required you to reformat?

You'll be pleased to know that I have got it installed now. But it was bit drastic as I had to format the laptop again, install Windows XP Pro, ie. ditch the Home Edition, install SPs, .NET etc. and it works perfectly.

Maybe there is an issue with PM and XP Home????

Thanks anyway for all your help.

That's great, Jeremy!
We are not aware of any issue with PM and XP Home - we have tested on all platforms.
Anyway, glad it works now.

Hi,
I did have problems installing Power Music 1.0.1.20 under Windows Vista 64bit. It was not Power Music itself but the preinstall of SQL Server 2005 Express edition. The install procedure returned the eror message "This version of SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is not supported for the current processor architecture."

I got around the problem by first downloading SQL Server 2005 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=220549b5-0... and SQL Native Client from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=DF0BA5AA-B...

*** Look for the "X64 Package (sqlncli_x64.msi) - 6403 KB" one.

Beware because this loads the incorrect version of the SQL Native Client the install is left hanging immediately after the "Installing Prerequisites" stage (but before the rest of the installation process), go to the control panel and remove the "Microsoft SQL Native Client", and then install the newly downloaded/extracted sqlncli_x64.msi instead. When that's done, you should be able to go through the end of the installtion process without too much more difficulty.

Thanks, James
This is very helpful. We will work on supplying an installation for Vista 64bit which has the prerequisite for the relevant version of SQL Server 2005 Express edition.
Meanwhile if other users with the same problem follow the directions given by James they should be able to install Power Music.

There is now a 64 bit version of the installation.

Hi,
Just got around to installing Version 2.0.1.0. I must admit I was putting it off because of the SQL issues above. But the 64 bit version just installed in seconds with no problems at all! I did backup the database prior to install, then restore when installed. Also I have just discovered it left the old 32 bit version 1 intact.
Thanks, good job.
James
